Driver side or blind side: which way should you back?
When you have a choice, set up to back toward the driver's side. You can see more of the trailer path and make smaller corrections with better information.
Short answer
Back toward the driver's side whenever possible.
A safer setup does not remove the need to look. Avoid unnecessary backing, use a helper when available, agree on signals, and stop to get out and look whenever the path is uncertain.
Build a safer backing setup
- Plan: inspect the destination and identify fixed hazards before moving.
- Position: choose a setup that keeps the trailer path on the driver's side when possible.
- Communicate: use one trained helper and agree on clear hand signals.
- Move slowly: make small corrections and stop before uncertainty becomes momentum.
- Get out and look: verify clearances as often as needed.
